Black Coffee Biography (DJ)


Black Coffee is a South African DJ and record producer whose real name is Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo (born March 11, 1976). He started his career around 1994 and has released five albums plus a live DVD. Black Coffee rose to prominence after participating in the 2004 Red Bull Music Academy held in Cape Town. September 2015, won “Breakthrough DJ of the Year” DJ Awards in Ibiza.


Maphumulo majored in Jazz Studies at Technikon Natal, now Durban University of Technology before working as a stand-in singer for Madala Kunene alongside his schoolmates. Maphumulo, Shota and Demor formed an afro-pop trio called SHANA (Simply Hot and Naturally African) that was signed to Melt 2000, then led by Robert Truz. Maphumulo was chosen as one of two South African entrants at the Red Bull Music Academy in 2003, starting him in the South African dance-music scene. His first big break came when his song “Happiness” was featured on the DJs at Work album.


2005 launched his career with a remix of Hugh Masekela's 1972 hit Stimela. Later that year, he released his debut album and created his company. The album featured collaborations with artists such as Thandiswa Mazwai, Hugh Masekela, Busi Mhlongo among a few. It was well received in the SADC region. His album “Black Coffee” was created using basic music creation software.


By 2007, Black Coffee had been recognized in the South African DJ scene with tribal beats. In the same year, he released his second studio album titled "Have Another One", which featured "Wathula Nje" - a remix of Victor Ntoni's 2004 jazz ballad "Thetha", Madlingozi, Zonke, Hugh Masekela, Zakes Bantwini and others.


In 2012, the “Africa Rising” DVD and triple CD sold double platinum within a month. he featured different artists on the album “Africa Rising”, such as Bucie or the soul musician Toshi Tikolo on the title “Buya”


After his world tour started in January 2015 at Circulou in Mexico and ended in August 2015 at Circoloco on DC-10, he released his fifth album, Pieces Of Me.


2017, contributed to the beat of the song "Get It Together" on Drake's album More Life, released March 2017. In 2018, he released a collaboration single with David Guetta titled "Drive" featuring Delilah Montagu. It is featured on Guetta's next album.


In late 2018, he released a seven-track Music Is King EP. In September 2019, Black Coffee released “LaLaLa” with Grammy Award-winning American R&B singer Usher


Black Coffee' has married actress and TV presenter Enhle Mbali Maphumulo. He has 2 kids together as he has 4 kids in total. In July 2019, it was reported that he had divorced.
